"Albany’s pristine King George Sound is not the place for a desalination plant.
This iconic natural harbour is under threat by the Water Corporation's plans to build a desalination plant at Frenchman Bay. Discharging heavy brine into these pristine waters risks the health and amenity of this richly diverse marine environment. A leading international seagrass expert advises that the brine output would disturb the fragile balance of the sound and lead to a potential collapse of the ecosystem.
Fishing, aquaculture and tourism businesses depend upon the sound’s clean waters. The first ANZAC convoy left Australia from here. It is culturally significant for the Menang Noongar people, the custodians of this place they call Mammang Koort, heart of the whale.
We urge the Minister for Water, Hon. Simone McGurk MLA, to intervene to ensure that the Water Corporation seeks a less damaging site for this plant that would not risk this remarkable underwater ecosystem nor the livelihoods of businesses and industries that depend upon its health for their continued success.
