Not long after graduating from the University of Kansas in 2009 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Britta McKee started her jewelry business hunched over a work bench in a cramped garage in Topeka. From those humble beginnings, "Tobias Designs" earrings, necklaces and cufflinks now reside in seven shops across four states - at least until a new owner makes them their own. McKee began, and remains activ

e, in local and regional art and craft shows which offered her the opportunity to expose her work to the masses as well as earn her custom design orders. Magazines and local models show off Tobias Designs jewelry, as does the Topeka Capitol building after commissioning McKee to design and create jewelry using recycled copper panels from its iconic dome. Her passion and dedication to her hand crafted work earned the 2013 Kansas City Accessory Designer of the Year and Kansas City Peoples' Choice - Accessory Designer of the Year award. ! Drawing inspiration from nature, raw materials and her rambunctious son, Britta McKee, owner of Tobias Designs, invites patrons to interpret her work in any way their perspective offers. Utilizing layers of colors, detail, shapes and schemes, McKee masks and re-imagines her original design intents. The “straightforward complexity” ensures that wearers of her jewelry make it their own while, at the same time creating an identity for her work that strives for people to recognize, “That’s a Tobias Design piece.

Earrings & Cufflinks are complete!!

It’s hard to snap photos from my phone to justify how these turned out. I might have to get our fancy camera out!

These are all sterling silver etching of a logo a coworker of mine designed. A financial office was going through a rebrand. We had started the process in early summer. Everything launched the end of December!

This advisor was soo appreciative, impressed, & grateful of the new design. She stated on a call we had that she would love to have a pair of earrings with her logo. Needless to say she doesn’t know my degree is a BFA with an emphasis in metalsmith & jewelry.

Im excited to send these off to the office! I have enjoyed working with them and getting to know them!

While working on my undergrad at the University of Kansas I encountered a passion for anodize aluminum. I loved the science and vibrant colors the process made. During that time, I came across a book about to be published that was all about anodize aluminum. They were seeking submission and I thought it was something to consider! It couldn’t hurt anything right? I submitted 6 different pieces of jewelry. I remember the letter in the mail. When I was reading each “decline” next to each submission there was one that had “accepted”! While cleaning studio today, I found the book! This is something very important to me. 2025 is going to be a great year as I begin revamping my collection and designs!
